You should start by inspecting the generator fuel tank to succinctly ensure that there’s an adequate supply of clean fuel in the tank. 

Why I said you should start with the fuel system, especially the tank because fuel is a substance that deteriorates or becomes contaminated over time, which might lead your generator to perform poorly when needed. 

Therefore, if you have checked and it appears that the fuel in the generator tank is old or contaminated, you must drain the tank and replace it with fresh fuel. 

After that, you should direct your attention to the fuel filter. A clogged or obstructed fuel filter can disrupt the fuel flow and contribute to surging. Take the time to clean or replace the filter as necessary, allowing for unimpeded fuel delivery.

2. Clean the Carburetor

After you are done with the fuel system and it continues, your carburetor might be at fault. That’s because, when a carburetor is dirty or clogged it can cause the generator to surge. 

Firstly, you should locate the carburetor, which is typically positioned near the engine. With care, remove the air filter cover and filter itself. 

Then take a moment to inspect the carburetor for any signs of dirt, debris, or varnish buildup. These substances can impede the proper functioning of the carburetor and result in surging. 

Using a carburetor cleaner, diligently spray the cleaner into the various openings of the carburetor, ensuring that all internal parts are thoroughly cleaned. 

Once completed, reassemble the carburetor and air filter, making sure everything is securely in place. 

However, not everyone can clean their carburetor themselves, and if you think it’s something hard or you haven’t done it before, please invite a professional to help.

3. Adjust the Governor

Thirdly, if it continues, check and adjust the governor’s control. The governor’s control plays one of the most important roles in maintaining a stable power output by regulating the engine’s speed. 

If your generator is experiencing surging, it may indicate an issue with the governor’s adjustment. To rectify this, locate and adjust the governor control. This can also be a bit technical, so a professional is needed in this aspect.

But if you can do it yourself, the adjustment process may involve tightening or loosening a spring or making small changes to a screw. By doing that, you can work towards achieving the desired stability and smooth operation.

4. Inspect the Spark Plug

After you are done with the governor control, also inspect or even change your spark plug if necessary.

Fifthly, if you are done with the spark plug replacement or clean, also check the generator’s air intake and exhaust system.

Sixthly, ask yourself are you using the right load of the appliances for the generator? Overloading your generator can also lead to surging issues and at the same time reduce your generator’s performance. 

It is important to ensure that the total electrical load connected to the generator does not exceed its maximum capacity. 

Take a moment to reassess the load and unplug any unnecessary appliances or equipment that may be overburdening the generator. 

But if the surging persists even with a reasonable load, and you have carefully done all steps in this blog post, it’s time to proceed with further troubleshooting steps.
